The United States completed the withdrawal of its forces from Afghanistan on Monday ahead of the deadline. A Taliban spokesperson confirmed that ‘the last American soldier’ had left Afghanistan. Celebratory gunfire was heard across Kabul after the last U.S. planes left, ending a 20-year war. “I'm here to announce the completion of our withdrawal from Afghanistan and the end of the military mission to evacuate American citizens, third-country nationals and vulnerable Afghans,” said General Frank McKenzie, commander of the US Central Command.
