World Cup: German fans respond in anger after being taunted with pictures of Mesut Ozil on exit

German fans were taunted upon their exit from the stadium, after their team got knocked out of the World Cup, by people holding up pictures of former German footballer Mesut Ozil. Some responded in anger and attempted to destroy the pictures.

Germany’s team covered their mouths in protest before their first game of the tournament after Fifa announced it would give a yellow card to players wearing the One Love armband.

The protest drew criticism from some people, including Belgium’s Eden Hazard, who said that players should focus on the matches. Others called Germany’s protest hypocritical, as they recalled Ozil’s disappointment with the German football association for failing to stand with the German-Turkish player when he faced a deluge of racism towards the end of his career with the national side.
