So Facebook's announced that it will wipe all location data in the coming months. Additionally, the company will stop background location tracking from now on.

But why would they do this?

Well, the announcement said that Facebook is shutting it down due to low usage. This means Facebook didn't really need your location data, to begin with. Access to your interests and your friend's interests is good enough for ad targeting.

What's crazy, is this will be the second time Facebook has recently deleted a large amount of data.

6 months ago, they shut down their facial recognition system. And this was also huge because Facebook became scary good at identifying faces in photos.

Facebook's DeepFace was identifying faces with 97% accuracy. For reference, the FBI's system only has a 85% accuracy.

So what's the real reason behind this?

Well, it's safe to say people don't love what Facebook does to their privacy. After all, only 44% of people trust Facebook with their personal data. But the Zuck is trying to change that, so
