'Pak National Security Policy Is An Image Makeover Narrative'

Pakistan unveils its first ever national security policy on Friday, to perhaps great expectations from some inside and outside the country. Given its parlous economic state and an army dominated political order that has bankrupted it in every way, Pakistan needs something that provides hope and outlines a way out of the current mess.

But Pakistan watchers like Sushant Sareen of the Observer Research Foundation are skeptical. Speaking on The Gist, Sareen pointed out that in all these years, the army top brass has shown no inclination that they value the nation more than their interests. While media reports suggest the new policy envisages an end to hostility with India and Kashmir will not stand in the way of trade and business, it's not clear this will happen.

More likely, this is an image building effort, a way to tell the world that Pakistan has turned over a new leaf while leaving the substance unchanged.

Tune in for more in this conversation with Sushan Sareen on StratNewsGlobal's The Gist.
