Spafford was once a prominent Chicago lawyer and successful real estate investor. He placed his faith in God during his life’s prosperity, but also during its calamities. In a few short years, he lost all his five children and properties in different incidents. On his way to meet his heartbroken wife, passing over the same sea that had just claimed the lives of his remaining children, it was then he wrote this timeless hymn.
Hymn composer Philip Bliss was so moved by Spafford’s prose that he composed a peaceful tune to accompany the words.
