Hey Tiktok : Unhealthy Coping Isn't Cute & Quirky - Entering a new year means new resolutions, often with goals relating to mental health in mind. How we cope with distressing situations can often lead to some impulsive actions with negative consequences, and it takes a lot of self-reflection to be able to avoid reacting in a way that would hurt us more long-term. It seems that social media platforms like tiktok are constantly pushing trends of people getting revenge on cheating exes and enermies through petty, illegal, and shocking ways, all of which seem satisfying in the moment, but will ultimately harm the wronged party more down the road. They are framed as empowering, as cute and quirky things that make someone seem confident, when the reality is it only highlights their hurt, their self-esteem issues, and the time they give to someone who doesn't deserve it instead of to themselves. Today, we talk about why normalizing these toxic stories delays healing, gives the person in the wrong fuel to avoid responsibility for their flawed behaviors, and why you deserve so much more than to let the people who wrong you live rent-free in your head! Here's to a happy, healthy, and positive 2023!!!
