Born in India, Gita Gopinath is the First Deputy Managing Director of the International Monetary Fund. She previously served as IMF's Chief Economist from 2019-22. In that role she helmed thirteen releases of the World Economic Outlook, including forecasts of the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic on the global economy. She was the first woman globally to occupy the top economist post at IMF, and the second Indian to hold this position after Raghuram Rajan. Considered as one of the world’s outstanding economists, Gita calls herself an accidental economist.
