Was this the most ludicrous invention of the cold war?
The cold war was a battle of minds which relied heavily on secretive information. It was this cat and mouse game that made espionage gadgets vital for the two superpowers. From the shoe heel listening device to the f-12 camera, everything and anything to one up the enemy remained on the table. However, perhaps the most ludicrous invention used by the CIA in the fight against communism, now dubbed as project ‘Acoustic Kitty’, would only be disclosed in 2001 by a top-secret document. A rather unbelievable tale, this audacious project saw microphones and radio transmitters implanted into the ears of our feline friends. The first of these spy cats saw deployment in Washington D.C, with the objective to eavesdrop on two men outside a soviet compound. Unfortunately, the mission ended in disaster, with the furry operative being hit and killed by a taxi almost immediately. By the time of the failed projects cancellation in 1967, Acoustic Kitty had cost the US government an eye-watering 20-million-dollars.
