Washes hands.
Explains procedure to resident, speaking clearly, slowly, and directly. Maintains face-to-face contact whenever possible.
Provides privacy.
If resident is in bed, adjusts bed to safe level and locks bed wheels.
Fills basin halfway with warm water. Tests water temperature (no higher than 105°F - 115°F). Has resident test water temperature and adjusts if necessary.
Puts on gloves.
Soaks all 10 fingertips for at least five minutes.
Removes hands from water. Washes hands with soapy washcloth. Rinses. Pats dry resident’s hands with a towel, including between fingers.
Places resident’s hands on towel and gently cleans under each fingernail with orangewood stick. Wipes stick on towel after cleaning and washes resident’s hands again. Dries hands thoroughly, especially between fingers.
Shapes fingernails in a curve with an emery board or nail file. Finishes with nails free of rough edges. Applies lotion.
Empties, rinses, and dries basin. Places basin in designated area or returns to storage. Places soiled clothing and linens in proper containers.
Removes and discards gloves and washes hands.
Returns bed to lowest position.
Places call light within resident’s reach.
Washes hands.
