Oceti Sakowin March for Our Children LIVE in Pierre, SD
NDN will be going LIVE today at 1pm CST, to highlight the Oceti Sakowin March for Our Children, an action in opposition of Governor Noem’s and SD Department of Education’s newly proposed social studies standards, of which contribute to the perpetuated erasure of Indigenous history, experience, and perspective.
The March, being led by NDN Collective’s Education Equity team, in partnership with the South Dakota Education Equity Coalition, will journey past the State Capitol and end at Hilger’s Gulch, located in front of the Department of Education’s building. There, a rally will ensue at 2pm, where we will hear from NDN Collective’s Education Equity Team, several additional NDN staff members, area educators and more.
5 demands will be shared during this event, including;
Make Oceti Sakowin Essential Understandings & Standards explicitly inclusive within the state standards
Move the Office of Indian Education back under the Department of Education
Honor South Dakota law and the Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA), with regard to Tribal consultation for the inclusion of Tribal Chairmen & Tribal Education Departments in stat decision-making impacting education
Hold study session to enable opportunities for school choice specific to Indigenous education
