Neill Blomkamp’s feature directorial debut, District 9, is a live example of the fact that not every alien who comes in a spaceship has to be either angelic, made out of stainless steel or have on display the mandatory eight limbs. Based on Blomkamp’s 2006 mockumentary short film titled, Alive in Joburg, this 2009 science fiction action flick explores the themes of social segregation, xenophobia and humanity. The movie in part, makes use of the found footage format and comprises of fictional interviews, news footage and videos from the surveillance cameras. Post the movie’s release by TriStar Pictures, District 9 became a phenomenal financial success, grossing over 210 million dollars at the box office. Not only did the film receive commendation from the critics going gaga over the direction, acting, storyline, as well as the elements it revolved around but the flick, was also addressed as one of the best sci-fi movies of the 2000s. That’s not even all; District 9 ended up being a recipient of a total of 116 nominations including four Oscar nominations and also won close to 31 awards.
You will be surprised to know that the design for the aliens featured here actually went through a lot of changes and repetitions before settling down with the final ‘Prawn’ concept. Initially, the aliens were being thought of as bulky creatures that boasted leathery skin and faces filled with tentacles. In fact, it was also planned that actors donning creature suits would be portraying them. So much so that the ‘Prawn’ creatures were originally meant to be masters of the tentacled creatures. Thank God the idea was eventually disposed off, CGI came into the picture and we all know what the end result looked like!
