(10 Sep 2021) DESIGNER NAEEM KHAN SAYS PANDEMIC INSPIRED HIM TO CREATE THE MOST BEAUTIFUL SPRING/SUMMER 2022 COLLECTION HE COULD
Mystery, intrigue and 1950s deco glamour ruled the runway at designer Naeem Khan's Spring/Summer 2022 showcase, on Thursday (9 SEPT. 2021).
Old New York took center stage - a designer's love letter to a fallen city experiencing regrowth and rejuvenation.
Khan said the isolation of the COVID-19 pandemic inspired him to create the most beautiful collection he could possibly imagine.
"I've tried everything possible to make this collection a very colorful, happy collection. And that's the whole theme of the show. It's beauty and happiness."
A keen jet-setter, Khan travelled to his favorite European destinations as soon as he could travel, the vivid hues of the Amalfi Coast and Positano were strongly echoed in his collection.
"I just traveled during the summer because we were so locked up last year. So, I was in Europe. I was in, you know, many different places, Portugal, France, Italy. So the collection was inspired from, you know, all the beauty that there is in all the different parts of the world that my clients traveled to and the things we missed during COVID. So it's a luxury. Of course I do luxury, and it's all those kind of things. I mean, the prints were made in Italy, there's stuff from Portugal, there is stuff from Cuba. So the inspiration is travel."
The show evoked the feel of an intimate jazz club– providing a dark smoky canvas for pops of bright turquoise, hot corals and acid pinks.
Florals and luxury fabrics that have a tactile feel was a key component of the collection.
Khan said "you can do business through, you know, online business, but also understand that brick and mortar is important and experience is important, that when you want something really, really luxurious and important, you want to feel it, you want to touch it, you want to try it."
Khan, of Indian-American heritage is known for his opulent gowns and intricate details.
