If you have a California EDD Unemployment claim you are likely wondering if you can file a new claim and if you should reapply for unemployment benefits. Keep in mind, to qualify for a new claim you need to have at least $1400 in wages from a W2 employer and have completed some work since you filed your original claim. If your PUA unemployment claim just ended, it would be unlikely that you would qualify for a new claim since that was a Federal unemployment program that has now expired. Unless your circumstances have changed since you were first placed on a PUA claim and you do have enough W2 wages you would not qualify for a new claim. Many of us had to apply for a new claim when our benefit year ended earlier this year, if you didn’t qualify for a new claim then (and most of us didn’t because we have not completed any work since filing our original claim) it would be unlikely you would qualify now unless you had enough W2 wages and completed some work since your benefit year ended. These are the 5 ways your unemployment claim would continue without the extra $300 weekly boost.
1. If your program type says FED ED and you haven’t collected 13 weeks under that program type yet, your benefits will last 1 extra week through September 11th.
2. If your balance just hit 0 on your regular UI claim or you were on a PEUC, extension tier 2 or extension tier 2 augmentation and you meet the earnings requirements, your benefits will last 1 extra week through September 11th.
3. If your program type says UI you can continue to collect on your claim until your balance reaches 0, you return to work or your benefit year ends, whichever is sooner.
4. If you got a DNCP notice, your new claim will begin and you can continue to collect on your claim until your balance reaches 0, you return to work or your benefit year
5. If you do apply for a new claim and are awarded a new claim, you can continue to collect on your claim until your balance reaches 0, you return to work or your benefit year

* I think everyone should be able to get ahold of the CA EDD for free, I still advocate calling (833) 978-2511 the best days to call the EDD are Tuesday through Saturday, the best times to call the EDD are right when they open at 8:00 to 8:15 or later in the afternoon around 2:30 - 4:00 then after the long intro message quickly hit 1,3,4.
