Nesthy Petecio is one win away from delivering the Philippines’ first Olympic gold medal in boxing.

Facing a much taller opponent anew, Petecio cut down Irma Testa to size to march into the gold medal round of the women’s featherweight class at the Tokyo Olympics Saturday at Kokugikan Arena.

TOKYO—Her country. Her father. Her late best friend. Her coaches. Every Filipino who prayed for her as she stepped into the ring for the biggest fight of her life so far.

Nesthy Petecio wasn’t going to let any of them down.

Ever since Petecio embarked on her Olympic campaign with a decisive win against her Congolese foe back in July 24, jokes have been popping up in social media saying that, should Nesthy go the distance and take the gold, the brand should give her free powdered beverages for life.

TOKYO – One win to a sure silver; two to a gold.

Filipino Olympic pugilist Nesthy Petecio once predicted that Filipino women will outplay men in the sports world.

“Ang masasabi ko lang, mag-ingat-ingat na kayong mga kalalakihan kasi
malapit na kayong malamangan ng mga kababaihan. Kumbaga wag kayong kumpyansa sa mga kababaihan po kasi kaya na namin kayong sabayan,” she said.

Nesthy Petecio will be going home with either a silver or gold medal in the Tokyo Olympics.

This after Petecio outworked her Italian foe Irma Testa via split decision in the women's featherweight semifinals set in the Kokugikan Arena on Saturday.

Filipina boxer Nesthy Petecio put the Philippines on the brink of another Olympic gold medal, as she moved on to the championship round in women’s featherweight at the Tokyo Olympics Saturday.

Petecio managed to escape the taller Irma Testa of Italy in the semifinal round via a 4-1 split decision to assure herself at least a silver medal in the quadrennial meet.

Should Petecio win gold on August 3, Tuesday, it will be Philippines’ second Olympic title after Hidilyn Diaz’s historic feat in weightlifting last week.

Another Filipina is on the verge of making Olympic history as Nesthy Petecio is just two wins away from clinching the Philippines' first boxing gold medal in the Summer Games.

Petecio said this in March, a few months before the Tokyo Olympics, and now, the Philippines has its first gold medal from a woman, 30-year-old weightlifter Hidilyn Diaz who also set an Olympic record for the 55kg category.
Against a much taller foe, Petecio initially struggled with Testa's reach as the Italian secured the first round, 10-9, for all five judges.

The Filipina fighter then became more aggressive in the second round to score a 10-9 of her own.

It all came down to the third round, where Petecio got the nod from Judges 1 to 4, while one judge gave the round to Testa.
