After much delay, the 2.9-kilometer Ghatkopar-Mankhurd flyover reopened to traffic on Sunday. The flyover is designed to relieve traffic congestion on the Ghatkopar-Mankhurd Link Road for commuters travelling between Navi Mumbai and Mumbai. Uddhav Thackeray, who inaugurated the flyover, which has been in the works for half a decade, directed the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) to ensure that the flyover's surface is smooth.

The flyover's construction began in February 2016, at a cost of about 500 crore, and was intended to be completed by January 2019. However, the project was postponed. According to BMC officials, the contractor has also been fined Rs. 40 lakh for the delay in completing the project.

The BMC also changed the design of the flyover by including a connecting to the Deonar dumping ground, bringing the total cost of the project to over 700 crore. The flyover is planned to relieve traffic congestion on the Ghatkopar-Mankhurd Link Road, which is used by cars travelling to Navi Mumbai, Lonavala, and Pune.

The flyover will connect the highways of Sion and Panvel. The flyover may be used by all cars coming from the Eastern Express Highway and the Santacruz-Chembur Link Road. It is also expected to relieve heavy automobile traffic because of its proximity to important highways leading to Konkan and Bengaluru, according to officials.

“It is a relief today for thousands of folks with the opening up of this flyover,” Thackeray remarked as he opened the traffic flyover. I used to avoid travelling through this stretch, but with the construction of this flyover, cars would be able to avoid the traffic below. I only have one tiny proposal for the BMC: the flyover's surface should be improved to offer a smooth experience. However, I am glad that the BMC was able to complete its task during such a difficult time as the Covid-19 pandemic.”

A debate has already erupted over the name of the flyover. Rahul Shewale, a Shiv Sena MP, had urged that the BMC rename the overpass in honour of Sufi mystic Khwaja Gareeb Nawaj Moinuddin Chisti. The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) was against it and wanted it renamed Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj. Following this, on July 29, a proposal to name it after Shivaji Maharaj was approved in a works committee meeting. However, the BMC's general council has yet to ratify the name, which is scheduled to happen in the coming days.

Aaditya Thackeray, mayor Kishori Pednekar, local BJP MP Manoj Kotak, and minority affairs minister Nawab Malik, who is also an MLA from Anushakti Nagar constituency, were among those who attended the event on Sunday.

However, Congress corporator Ravi Raja, the BMC's opposition leader, said that he was not invited to the event, despite etiquette requiring that opposition leaders be invited to such gatherings. “The councillors and group leaders were supposed to be invited to events,” Raja explained. In a democracy, the opposition leader holds a significant position. In addition, by legislation, the state government has granted this position in the civic body statutory status. The BMC administration's insult will not be tolerated.”
