TEXT FROM THE GOSPEL AND HOMILY

The Lord be with you. And with your spirit.

A reading from the holy gospel according to mark. Glory to you o Lord.

Jesus summoned the twelve and began to send them out two by two and gave them authority over unclean spirits. He instructed them to take nothing for the journey but a walking stick - no food, no sack, no money in their belts. They were, however, to wear sandals but not a second tunic. He said to them, "Wherever you enter a house, stay there until you leave. Whatever place does not welcome you or listen to you, leave there and shake the dust off your feet in testimony against them." So they went off and preached repentance. The twelve drove out many demons, and they anointed with oil many who were sick and cured them.

The gospel of the Lord. Praise to you Lord Jesus Christ.

So this is a terrific little gospel wonderful message today. It is Jesus commissioning the twelve so he says to them, "Go forth and bear witness as my apostles. Travel light, don't even pack a second tunic.” Travel light and do good for those who welcome you for those who do not welcome you don't worry about it. Don't waste your time with people that are not going to listen. Instead, minister to those who are open to the message in the first place now there is some advice here that is very appropriate for us here and now today because most of us now do not travel light. Not at all. We gear up to be ready for just about any situation that we can imagine. And even if we're not traveling or moving around, we still load up on stuff more often than not. And we depend on external things probably more often than we need to. Did it feel like the end of civilization when the internet cut out for a few hours last time with you? As if you can't live without it or seriously? When was the last time you just watched a sunset without your phone or any other distractions around? This is one of those things that the modern world has done to us. It's like we're all walking around in life with a big old invisible hiking backpack filled with stuff that we've acquired ironically for the sake of our convenience. Do you want to be a more authentic disciple of Christ? If yes, consider the wisdom in the commissioning of the twelve. Pack light, let go of all that junk you packed for the trip. You don't need it. A walking stick and sandals is all you need and in terms of making a first step along that little path, I invite you to take a look at your life and find something and identify something that might be weighing you down and consider going without it for a little while. Put it down for a morning or maybe a whole day or an entire week. Whatever works, and you may just find that you are a more effective disciple of Christ when you travel light in life.
