Armenia's ruling party 'will assist' Pashinian's election

(3 May 2018) The deputy head of the Republican Party of Armenia said the ruling party will assist in the election of protest leader Nikol Pashinian if he manages to both keep protesters off the streets and maintain politican support in parliament.

Armen Ashotyan said the decision was aimed at preventing the political crisis from transforming into an institutional one.

Ashotyan said his party acknowledged many people have lost confidence in the ruling party, and said it's now time for Nikol Pashinian to cease political rhetoric and show he can offer a credible alternative.

He added the Republican Party will make Pashinian's dream "to have strong institutional opposition in Armenia" come true.

Ashotyan ruled out working with Pashinian within the framework of a government, but said they will wait to see concrete proposals and pledged to engage in dialogue with the new government.

The Republican party still holds a majority of seats in Parliament and if elected, Pashinian faces the risk of an uphill battle to get his measures through the assemblee.

But Ashotyan said the Republicans are not "interested in the total failure" of any new government, and are acutely aware of the "emotional frustration that could come up in case all these highly raised expectations are not treated properly."
